The salt lakes of Torrevieja / La Mata
The salt lakes of Torrevieja / La Mata are located in a protected natural area. This nature reserve has been declared a bird nature reserve and offers shelter to many bird species. They are the oldest and largest salt lakes in Europe. The park is ideal for hikers and cyclists. For both there is a route with clear road signs. The trail is approx. 3 km long and the cycle route has a distance of approx. 6 km. It is possible to spot birds at various places and picnic tables and seats have been placed at various locations. The salt lakes, due to their medicinal properties, benefit greatly from people who have problems with their skin, rheumatism, arthritis. A healing mud bath or a dip in the lake has a positive effect. The salt lakes of Torrevieja and La Mata have been placed on the Unescolijst by the WHO (World Health Organization). Laguna de la Mata y Torrevieja National Park consists of two salt lakes. La salina de Torrevieja is 1,400 hectares and has a length of 5.5 kilometers. The lake is due to the high salinity an ideal habitat for a microscopic algae that causes the pink color of the lake. Tip: if you want to swim (read: float) in the lake, take a bottle of water with you to rinse off the salt deposits on your body afterwards.
Mar Menor and mud baths Lo Pagan
Mar Menor is located in southeastern Spain and is situated on a peninsula of more than 20 kilometers between the Mediterranean Sea and the Mar Menor, also called small sea. Mar Menor is the largest seawater lake in Europe and certainly worth a visit. The Mar Menor is an ideal place for practicing many water sports, as the water is not deep and there are almost no waves. At the deepest point, Mar Menor is 7 km deep. The Mar Menor’s kulling is 73 km 2 with alternating beach and clear shallow water with an area of 170 Km2. Lo Pagan is known for its mud baths. The mud is medicinal because of the minerals, magnesium, sodium, bromine, calcium and fluoride. The salt lake where this medicinal mud is located is very hot due to the hot springs located in the salt lake. The water in the lake has a high salinity and contains a lot of iodine, so that many people with rheumatic complaints and arthritis visit the mud baths. Mar menor and the mud baths of Lo pagan are next to each other and are separated by a pier.
